25 The Demon and a Dying Mother

A bout two hundred miles south of Manila, a small university town sits at the edge of a large mountain on the island of Luzon. This town, which will remain unnamed to protect it from curiosity-seekers who might deter future students from applying, has approximately 1,500 inhabitants. More a village than a town, it hosts the most abundant areas of local plant and wildlife. Surrounded by farms and tropical forest, the college is a rice research institute, a school of agriculture and a training ground for veterinary medicine. The college itself is old, established like the village it sits on; the campus, a site of massacres in World War II when the Japanese infiltrated the village and plundered homes.

Just steps from the fringes of the dormitories lies the sub-rural homes built for the professors and employees of the university. One of these neighborhoods sits at the crossroads of what was the site of a major massacre that butchered the villagers in the dead of night as they fled from their homes.

One of these houses is a continual witness to the ghosts and entities that haunt the village. As the story unfolds, the reader may come to the conclusion in light of the involvement of the Holy Bible in this particular event that it may actually be a demon that came to visit upon this house.

Deeply religious as a Roman Catholic and devoted to the Holy Mother, “Sandy” was married for several years, and the marriage produced four children. As the story goes, she developed a heart condition early in her fifties upon her husband’s sudden departure to live with a younger woman he had met while traveling overseas. As the chaos in the home ensued with his choice to leave the otherwise happy family, Sandy’s health suffered and progressed to a heart condition.

As her illness progressed, Sandy became more devout, reportedly kind to a flaw and generous beyond anyone’s belief. She donated her time to the church and was immensely devoted to her children and one granddaughter, whom she almost spoiled. Sandy was seen as a very benign, open and loving person among relatives, friends and the community she lived in.

The family, her children in particular, felt that Sandy’s spiritual growth and consequent benevolence was a challenge to the demon, who find kind people whose righteousness to be steadfast and close to God a major challenge to convert. Some of the relatives felt that this type of person, where temptations fail, become an object of hatred and malign intent by the devil in his frustrated attempt to turn the good to evil.

Sandy’s four grown children, none of whom were home at the time of the incident, had no idea what was to visit on the home one weekend night. Since Sandy had grown breathless with each passing day, her visits to the hospital more frequent for oxygen, she elected to stay home instead of joining her children when they went out to the town.

On this particular night, it was well past 9 p.
